Train to Rouen September 10, 2013

France September 10, 2013

We took taxi,on rainy morning, to train station, then on to Lille(lee-eel). Could not locate our train to Rouen. Learned that there is a train strike so we scrambled to find alternate route or book a car from here. Only feasible train is leaving at 5pm, too late to pick up our car. Decided to book a room in Rouen and get car in the morning. Having to change car reservation but getting higher price. Celine managed to keep our reservation and price through the Rouen Hertz office. Still quite rainy. After booking a hotel reservation at the Ibis hotel for Rouen we got the train. Arrived before the sunset. Took short walk to see the Notre Dame Cathedral. Hotel staff recommended Shabada restaurant a block from us. Very French food with emphasis on presentation. Slow service but worth the wait, drank wine to pass the time (Montagne Saint-Emilion)

France - Edam, Volemdam and Markem

September 6, 2013
We grabbed two coffees and croissants from local bakery and took the half hour bus ride from central station to Edam, a picturesque town of 7000 residents known for it cheese market. Spoke to sales lady at cheese store to learn about the history. Based on her guidance we went to see the town's lone windmill, sought out Rick Steve's recommended lunch time cafe only to learn that it doesn't open till 2pm. Went instead to his other recommendation De  Fortuna.  This was a great choice with outdoor garden setting and great salads. Toured the city's history museum including a preserved merchant house typical of the early 1400s. Caught the bus to Volendam where a large fair and festival is going on. Lots of carnival rides and beer concessions. This was a former fishing village but is now more of a tourist attraction with a boat service to Markem, a quaint village where wooden shoes are made. Witnesses the making of them from wooden blocks. had a healthy rain shower and caught bus back to Amsterdam in time for dinner again at de Fortuna.

Netherlands - Arrived in Amsterdam

 September 3, 2013
After 10 hour flight we arrived in Amsterdam around 9am.  Discovered several miscues, U.S. credit cards (without security chips) are not accepted in many establishment in Europe, many businesses here only accept euros, and most disconcerting was that Wayne did not recall his password for his Schwab ATM card. Needless to say this was a problem since bank cards other than Schwab charge 3% on all transactions. We took our lumps in order to get euros for train ride from airport to Amsterdam Central. A short walk took us to the rental office for our apartment. The second floor unit has steep steps and a bedroom plagued by a low calling. Decided to sleep on the foldout couch on lower floor. Otherwise the unit is fine. We ventured out for Spanish sandwiches and sangria-like wine. Back to our apartment for a short nap. Called Schwab and reset ATM password. Ready to spend many euros.
Walked around the area and had dinner at a nice boutique restaurant Bistro Neuf.  Walked along Damrak around the centrum and passed by several window with red light ladies on display. Called it after a long day.

September 5,2013
Today after coffee and baguettes we set off on the city walk as outlined in Rick Steve's book on Amsterdam (new church, Royal Palace, Amsterdam museum, Benjihof widows housing, flower market, Vondel city park). We ended this with our lunch atop the Kalvertoren shopping mall which provided a great panoramic  view of the city and then a tour of the renovated Eijksmuseum. The modernized building puts emphasis on Rembrandt's "The Night Watch". The outside gardens are dedicated to Henry Moore' sculptures. Next, was a 90 minute canal boat tour featuring many large and small canals, houseboats of all description.  We took a trolley back to the Jordan area for an Italian dinner and a short walk to our apartment.

Black Sand Basin and Yellowstone Canyon

July 25
After breakfast at the grill we drove back to up to view Black
Sands Basin and a tour by a very knowledgable lady ranger, highlight was the Emerald Pool. We next drove on the  Fire River road past the bubbling caldron.

Drove through Madison and down to Grand Canyon of Yellowstone to get a more extensive view of the river, lower and upper falls.
Travelled through Hayden Valley to view many Bison.

Back home to Grant for dinner at the grill. Wayne went to ranger presentation on bears. Interesting that up through 1974 the park service  provided waste food to the bears. No longer is feeding condoned and bears are less visible. Mothers with cubs are seen close to humans only as protection from males looking to mate. Half of new cubs only live through first year largely due to killings by the males.

July 24 Old Faithfull

Wednesday July 24

After breakfast we drove by Kieser Cascade then Old Faithful in time for eruption which occur at about ninety minutes intervals. Hiked the upper basin going as far as the grand Geyser. Not lucky enough to catch an eruption which occurs on six hour intervals. Although temperature is  only in the upper seventies the intensity of sun at this altitude makes it seem much hotter. Went to the Old Faithful Lodge for a beer and water.

July 23 Yellowstone entry

Tuesday July 23
Flew from SFO to Cody at 6:05. Took the east entrance to Yellowstone National Park, the first such established by President Grant in 1872. During President Teddy Roosevelt's term he expanded the protected area by creating a national forest around the park. We spotted our first wild game, an elk in a burned out area near Fishing Bridge. Something like 30 percent of the park was burned by the fires of 1988, the driest year in modern times. amazing regrowth of lodge pole pines has taken place by the falling of pine cone seeds.
We drove by Fishing bridge, no fishing there since 1974, in order to protect the endangered cutthroat trout during spawning. Checked out the old Lake area where Wayne had worked in 1958. Service station has been abandoned for several years and general store has been modernized and the celling has been raised.
Arrived at our lodging at Grant Lodge, old two story building with clean room, comfortable bed and amenities. Bought sandwich and fruit at the general and took a nap. Wayne went to ranger presentation on the formation of the park.

Feb 27, 2013 Last Full Day at Princeville

Feb 27, 2013 Our last full day so we decided to play some tennis at the great courts here at the Cliffs. Around noon we went back to Anini Beach for snorkeling. The wind was quite strong but we managed to see three turtles and a large school of small blue tangs. Combination of wind and tides kept us from seeing more since fish seem to seek protection with the coral reef. After hot tub and pool swim we returned our gear to the sports shop and went to the Hanalei Gourmet for more fish and chips.  Can't get enough of that fresh fish. Packed and cleaned up our condo.

Feb 27, 2013 Kauai Good day at Anini Beach

Feb 25, 2013 This was our best day at two beaches, Anini and Hanalei. Several large turtle were viewed along with a black and white ray, many wrasses, sergeant majors, parrots and colorful smaller fish. After fruit shake at local stand we headed for Hanalei and more fish watching. Back at our condo, we discovered that Monday is a reception party day with Mai Tais, wine, and munches. After a dip in the sauna and pool we had dinner at our favorite Mexican restaurant, Federico's.

Hindu Monastery and Botanical Gardens

Gate to Monastery
Visited the monastery and the Kadavul Hindu Temple, a beautiful and spiritual property.  After lunch at the Olympic Cafe where we shared a large Kauai pork burrito we went to the Common Ground for a hike to Stone Dam surrounded by a beautiful botanical garden with water falls and vast assortment of plants and trees.

Snorkeling at Ke'e beach

Our Condo at the Cliffs
Feb 23, 2013 We drove to Hanalei's Snorkel Bobs's for mask, snorkels,  and fins on our way to Ke'e Beach.  After some rain showers the sun came out and we enjoyed a  plethora of colorful tropical fish. Heavy rains soon after drenched us.  Stopped at Red Hot Mama's hopping for her island famous burritos.  Like some other small island restaurant owners she decided randomly not to open today. So we went home, showered and came back for fish and chips at our favorite Hanalei Gourmet and a shave ice next door.

Feb 22, 2013

Beautiful rainbow was omen for a nicer weather day.  After some aerobic exercises Miriam an I enjoyed some pool time and soaking up some sun rays. After lunch in our unit we are off for some shaved ice in Hanalei, and return movie to Resbox at Foodland "A Separation", about a troubled couple in Iran. Could have been filmed in any country dealing with the same issues. Weather starting to turn to more clouds.

Very Rainy Day on the Island

Feb 21, 2013 today was a very cloudy an rainy day until around 4pm. We ventured out after using the exercise room to have lunch at the Garden Cafe at the Common Grounds, a organic restaurant that draws  mainly holistic clientele. The food is from locally grown gardens and livestock. Drove to the

Kilauea lighthouse to view the red footed bobbies and the rough sea. left to take in the local f'armers market and buy more of the ripe local veggies and island unique fruits.

Moving Day toThe Cliffs

Feb 20, 2013 We only had one week at the PuuPoi condo so we moved to a single bedroom condo at the Cliffs.  The athletic facilities are better than at the PuuPoa, great tennis courts, pool and exercise room. Spent most of day settling in and reading about the sugar cane plantation owners, especially George Wilcox, son of missionary Abner Wilcox. Ate our chicken dinner at our condo. Food and meals are expensive so only eating lunches out.

Purchased bag of Chico, a Zapotec variety, and caimito, custard like fruit, bananas, lettuce, avocado and coconut. Vendor punched hole for straw to sip milk, later scooped out the meat. Back to our condo for nice sunset and dinner of our fish.

Grove Farm

Cats at Grove Farm

Feb 18, 2013 today we drove to Lihue to tour the Grove Farm which was the home of George Wilcox the major developer of  the sugar cane industry in Kauai. This  large estate lies almost surrounded by commercial shopping complex including Costco and Walmart. George was one of five sons fathered by the missionary, Abner Wilcox, whose life on the island was the inspiration for the missionary Abner  depicted in Michner's book Hawaii. Later, we went to dinner in town, guitar/u.

Poipu

Feb 17, 2013 Another day of uncertain weather so we drove to Poipu. Stopped in old town Koloa for lunch at funky restaurant. Wind was blowing hard at the Spouting Horn so the women spent time shopping in the covered jewelry stands. Too many clouds on the mountains so we walked around the Grand Hyatt Kauai gardens instead of driving up Waimea Canyon.
